How do you tighten the AC Belts?

Hi friends. I changed the AC belts which required removing a transmission cooler line and loosening the mechanical belt tensioner and pulley. A few issues:


1) The pulley bearing was shot. I located a NOS bearing made in W Germany but the pulley disintegrated at the snap ring retainer when pressing. It trashed the pulley. Luckily, I have a spare. I reused the stretch bolt because I couldn't find the part number for a new one.

2) The kamax bolt was rounded and in poor shape. My spare kamax from my donor car was rounded worse. I sourced a titanium bolt with a shoulder and smaller head. I can get a box end around it when tightening.

3) The aluminum tension arm had heavy welds from a previous crack/repair. Again, parts car saved the day. The donor arm showed signs of trauma from pry bars and maybe a pipe wrench.


I can't get the belts tight enough to keep them from slipping. There doesn't seem to be a good way to apply torque to the arm while tightening the bolt. Is there a procedure or a tool that works best? I was thinking of making a fork but I'm worried about damaging the aluminum arm.

I use a small hydraulic jack from below the car with long piece of wood on top to uplift the idler. Also use OPTIKRIK TENSION GAUGE to check for correct tension.
