A Southern Gentleman, from Tennessee, who was to be Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, until, arguably, scandal came his way --- Associate Justice, Abe Fortes.

One biographer noted that Justice Fortes, a New Deal and Great Society Democrat would ride in the front seat of his Short Wheel Base 600, seated next to his driver for his morning drive to the Court.

Yeah, it actually has been for sale now for as long as I can remember. In fact, I think it has been for sale for about 4 months or more. Its in nice shape, great interior incuding a center flip down LCD monitor and new leather. The wood looks great. I have also seen it on a couple of other sites for sale.

Hm, the paperwork for my car shows a certain "Citoyen President de la Republique Mobutu Sese Seko - Kinshasa" as the first owner :-) The 600 book by H. Hofner shows this 1965 car as the first to be delivered to Zaire... with 15 more that followed between 1967 and 1977. Gues he kind of liked them [:D]

Are you sure the King Of Tonga has/had a 600? ,I know he used to keep a Checker(!!!) in Auckland for when he made one his frequent visits.

In the '70s I went to a really fancy English boarding school, and I remember every year on parent's day, some would make it a full on contest to out-do the other parents for the poshest ride. My friend Jonathan Bentley (who went on to become a producer at Top Gear) and I, would wander around the car parking fields just to gawk at the fancy cars. I remember seeing lots of 600s, but I couldn't put any celebrity names to any of them. I do remember seeing Adnan Khashoggi tooling around in a Rolls Cloud III, and Chief Ashamu of Nigeria in a pre-war Rolls Phantom.

Of course it was tough to out-impress the few who would invariably turn up by helicopter.

It's a book about Mercedes cars owned by Royalty and celebrities, presumably including lots of 600s.

Fidel Castro's 600 was in the movie that Oliver Stone shot in Cuba about Castro. At the end of the movie there is an interview with Fidel and Oliver in the 600. Fidel offered Oliver Stone to drive him to the airport, which Olive Stone refused, claiming he (Fidel) must be very busy to attend to the state, which Fidel answered jokingly: You are American, I want to make sure you leave.
I guess dictators have sense of humor too.
If I recall the interior is Cogniac, and exterior is black. the car was a gift from Honeocker (ex dictator of east germany)The car is bullit proof.

I just discovered, that the Sultan of Brunei has TEN M100's. In case 4 SWB, 3 sixdoor Pullmann, 1 fourdoor Pullmann and 2 Landaulets.

Hi Pual, those AMG prefixs would be the ones with the V12 engine?.The pictures of one in HongKong were his ,with the W140 engine.Theres plenty of horsepower but not enough torque to drive the car up onto a transporter.

A few years back at Techno Classica, I remember being in on a discussion with a guy who had converted six 600s to V12 M120 drivetrains for the Sultan, and was negotiating with Karl Middlehauve to find a home for the M100 engines and trannys.

Hi Ron and Mike,

I found those Vinnumbers on the web and then you can figure out which types that are. There is nothing said about originality. So it could be that some or all have now a V12, mounted by AMG. For shure the Vinnummber 601 hass the V12motor and is black colored with black leather.

But if these V12 powered W100 have not enough power to enter a transporter, it also shows how good those old big torque M100-motors were then and now !!!
(Un-)Lucky for us in Europe and the USA, that are all RHD-cars [:D]
so the LHD cars still will exist [:)]

Now we know that he has 2 Landaulets from the 59 and at least one (black) is converted to a V12-motor. It would be nice if you had more knowledge about his M100-cars and options.

The King Hoessein of Jordanie owned also a 600 with the steps for his bodyguards. But that was a 4door Pullmann and no Landaulet. I just don't know if the color was silver or white, while that is hardly to see in a black&white newspaper. The Foto was made after his return from New York for his 6 month cancerrecovery.





Note: King Hussein had deliverd TWO identical white Pullman-cars, both from 1975.

I saw the Belgian news lately with the king of Belgium (Albert the second) with some people he had invited to his castle. The people were driven in a 600 SWB.
The car was originaly bought by the previous king named Boudewijn in the early seventies but the car is still in official use.

However the king just ordered 10 Mercedes R-class vehicles for official transportation.
He is a serious Mercedes fan.
Rumour has it he drove his 500E (W 124) some years ago in the Belgian Ardennes and the escorte (professiolal bodyguards) had to let him go. They just couldn't keep up with him. He's a very talented driver and owns now a SL 55 AMG for personal use.

I just got this 1971, Mercedes 600 S/N 100-012-12-001844, the car is white outside, leather blue inside.
The last owner ( Mercedes Dealer in Lebanon, T.Gargour )had the car since 1983 to 7.12.2006
The previous owner was Yul Bryner, can same body confirm this matter.
The car is located in Lebanon, was always inspected by Mercedes Lebanon, as the car was owned by the owner of Mercedes Lebanon

Thank you for your reply.
The ex owner of this car is the local Mercedes dealer. He did not get the car from new, the car was imported to Lebanon in 1983 from Mercedes Germany to Mr. Gargour him self. Mr. N.Gargour told me that the car was Yul Bryner ex car. I wonted to verify this authenticity.
I think the best way is to contact Mercedes Classic.

I very much doubt it. The queen used Phantoms. If you find pictures of her in one on a foreign visit, it probably wont be hers.

I've seen the pic of QE2 standing in the back of a 600 Landaulet, and simply assumed it was on a state visit somewhere.

If the Queen only want's cars built in Britain by British owned companies, she'd better order an Aston Martin and a London Taxi.

The Queen is more German than English. They changed the family name in WWI from Battenberg to Windsor, but her cousin the Earl maintained Mountbatten through until the IRA blew him up[V].

I always thought that the Queen ordered a 600 but was told by her minders ?politicians that it was inappropriate, so she had to get rid of it.

I'd not heard that before, but could be. Certainly, Diana had an R129 and apparently loved it but had to give it up under pressure. It is now in the Stuttgart Museum as you probably know, Almandine IIRC.

Yes, in 2007 Aston Martin was bought from Ford by a businessman called John Sinders with help from some Kuwaiti money. Ford still holds an 8% stake.

Thats a Bentley,I think they are smaller than a 600 (perspective?) but they certainly have the same road presence as a 600. That building looks like the place that has an underground car park as a used car lot ,full of Mercedes.
