Lodefest 2016, Portland, Oregon -Convoy
mpmorris
.
August 25-28th is the next Lodefest Convention in Portland, Oregon (see Home Page & early registration). For those in California, Arizona and possibly parts of Nevada that are planning a drive up Interstate 5, Gail and I will drive that route and thought to put the idea in your head that this is a great time to consider a caravan of M-100 cars. I hope to have two on the road.[:D] Plan ahead as they say.

Hi, Michael

Teri and I would like to join the caravan. We would otherwise take I-5 North, right past your front door.

Maybe I'll join you guys if the timing is right, and perhaps others coming from east of you will join up with me as well - heading west from Colorado in case folks need to plan.

Michael, you have too many cars![:0][:D]

Who's counting --Between my son and I, there are more at the ranch, basement & rear and side yards of the shop -a couple of motor homes mixed in -Maybe I should count -like my friend AJ Simmonds said, "you'll run out of money before you run out of 'good deals'" -Marcos with her shoes. Actually I'm running out of space and Sunday I inherit a '62 220b finny with a blown engine but a California car 'in the family since new' --just have to trailer it home.

02515 may still get put together and really make this a family event to Portland with my son and Lovelle in one, Summer and her family in one with Gail & I in the Black. The Black goes on the rack next week to get started on its road-ability after sitting since '83.

Michael, if your wife sees that list of cars in your first post above, you're in trouble!
Also, as an alternate to Michael and Jack's lightning trip up I-5, I am considering a more leisurely trip up 101, along the coast, probably spending one or two nights on the road (from SF Bay Area). I did that for the Portland meet in 2002 (or whenever we had it), and it was a really enjoyable trip.

Seeing as how I live just off I5 in Grants Pass, I might be interested in joining the convoy... Also, my office is just off exit 48. We make lots of interesting electronic stuff, and if there is interest, I could arrange a tour for the convoy either on the way up or back. Let me know if there is interest. You can see what we do at www.radiodesign.com.

Jack English
Jim, I hope you got my email message about the check. My wife and I will probably travel with the Morris family. We are planning to stay overnight in Ashland to break up the trip.

Jack,

I didn't get a private e-mail about the check, but I saw your post on the Lodefest info forum. You should be getting my registration via 2-day UPS letter on Thursday.

I am about 45 minutes North of Ashland, and there are some really nice places to stay around this area, and I have connections for some pretty good rates at one of the nice resort-type places here. If you'd like, I can have my corporate travel guy check what our rate is, and what availability is as well. Let me know.

What will you be driving? My chariot will be a 1979 6.9...

Looking forward to August!

Best Regards,
Jim
Jack English
Hi, Jim,

I'm sorry you did not get the message I sent; it didn't go back.

I have made reservations in Ashland through Hotels.com at the Best Western in town. These can be cancelled.

Thanks,
Jack

Jack,

I sent another message via regular e-mail, and have not heard back. I'm assuming you got it, and replied, but for some crazy reason I'm not getting your responses. If you got it, and replied, send me a note here on this board, and I guess we'll just have to communicate this way...

I've got some good options for your stay if you're interested.

Regards,
Jim

If 1703 is ready (and I'm pretty sure it will be), I'd definitely be interested in meeting to caravan. I'll be driving up from Los Angeles.

For anyone coming up I5 to Portland: I have some good connections for lodging in the Rogue River area, specifically the Weasku Inn. This is an historic inn where Clark Gable and others have stayed. It is very nice, and I have access to some stellar rates through my work. If anyone is interested, give me a call at my office.

Five Four One, Four Seven One, Eleven Hundred.

Ask for Jim, and tell them you're with the Mercedes club, and they'll put you through!

Hi, Jim, although we have reservations in Ashland, we might consider a switch. Also, I'm confused about your comments about emails. What was I going to respond about? Short term memory, senior moments and all that. Quite sorry. I have your daytime number and I will call.

Ok --The current plan: Jack & Teri will arrive in Walnut Grove off interstate 5 Wednesday morning the 24th driving from Carmel/Los Banos I-5.
There they will pick up a second car for the caravan driven by my wife Gail and my son's Lady Friend. They -through Jim Hindershot will stay over night near Grants Pass at a lodge (got the last two available rooms). Thursday morning, they will head out to Portland with Jim I believe in a 6.9.

Sutton and I will leave Walnut Grove Thursday morning the 25th 3-4am and hopefully catch up with a heavy foot (while they sleep --ha,ha).

Brian Glusovitch will make a pleasurable full two or three day drive out of it by traveling the scenic route 101 but originating from Cambria.

So that is the basic outline as of the moment for those that may want to participate in some leg of the trip.

Nobody seems to be jumping on the band wagon -cars not ready? --mine aren't.
002171 has the interior, headliner, front and rear glass still out --Rust repair is underway on the right 1/4 panel. The radio and speedo are out getting refurbished and it still needs heater & air conditioner attention
003541 is still on the rack with many new pieces still in the boxes.
But we will be ready.
WA6VQP
I'm ready!!! Well, almost...

My 6.9 is coming home today, and should be in great shape, if my mechanic is correct. Once I get all the details, I'll post in the 6.9 forum about what all happened.

For those coming up I5 and staying near Grants Pass, how about dinner on Wednesday evening. I know a great place, and can get it all set up. Let me know!

By the way, I spoke with Gary Anderson at the Star, and he is on board for me to submit an article for the Star on this year's Lodefest. Should be some nice publicity!

Getting close... Looking forward to it! See you all there!

Jim

Jim, I believe Teri and I will join you for dinner. We need to meet up with Gail and Kip near Sacramento. We will try for an early start from Carmel Valley. My car is at the paint shop having the top redone. The clear coat was shedding after 30 years. The painter and I agree that if this lasts another 30 years, neither of us will have to worry about it. Same painter as in 1986.

OK!

So far, Jim & Kirsten (us) and Jack and Teri, and possibly Kip and Gail for dinner.

Anyone else??? Also, let me know about Kip and Gail for sure.

Thanks!

Got the beast back. Runs perfectly so far!

See you all soon!

OK, will add more folks to the reservation. Fortunately, the place can easily handle a big group.

One question: Any consensus on the time? When does everyone think they'll be here, and when do we want to eat?

Also, I can arrange a tour of the electronics firm where I work, if that's interesting to anyone...

Thoughts?

Jim, our time depends on when we leave Walnut Grove. I want to drive straight on I-5. When we used to travel to Seattle, we arrived between 7:00 and 8:00 from Carmel. It takes about 3 to 3 1/2 hours from Carmel to Walnut Grove.

Jack (and everyone else),

OK, I looked up the travel time (on Maps) from Walnut Grove to Rogue River, and it says about 5 ½ hours. Assuming you all leave in the morning at some point, there would be time for a tour here at my workplace, and then we could have dinner at a reasonable hour.

If the idea of a tour is too much, given the drive, I totally understand, and I will just make arrangements for dinner without the tour.

Let me know what your pleasure is, and I will take care of the details!

Looking forward to seeing you all next week!

All righty, then...

So, what's the consensus? Dinner at 7, 7:30 or a different time?

Once everyone agrees, I'll make the reservations. The good thing is that if it gets a bit later, it should be no problem shifting the time to fit.

Let me know, and I'll get on it!

OK. Absent other comments to the contrary, here's the plan:

7:00 PM, reservation for five from California, plus two from here (Kirsten and me), a total of seven.

Seven at seven. Sounds poetic! [:)]

Thanks, looking forward to a fun time!

Jim - Thank you for setting this up! I had the pleasure of meeting Jack yesterday at Legends of the Autobahn. He was one of the judges. Still in the assembly process of the black and ivory 6.3s. I realized that I cannot really assemble both cars at the same time -try as I might, so I'm concentrating on the black car. This morning (Sunday the 21st.), completing the replacement of the rear brake caliper brake strut nylon bearings. I'm on the short list now -yesterday the valves got adjusted, cold start valve wiring/relays were corrected as well as tuning and spark plugs. Still have to charge the air, install a radio and speakers --that should about do it.
Hopefully this afternoon I'll get on the interior of the ivory car -still have to fit (as best as my skill level will allow) the headliner. I have it installed with new front & rear window seals but need to fit it around the door frames. Then seats, speedometer, radio, etc. Sutton installed exterior door handles and grill last night --and a brake booster -still have to do that--.

Anyway --Wednesday is getting close --see you all then.

Jack,

I'll look forward to hearing from John. Don't know if Weasku has any more rooms, but one never knows at this time of year. In any case, I'll add one more to the reservation.

For the group,

I'm checking into a small Italian deli with limited room and excellent food. If they have room, how does dinner there sound? Mostly local, mostly organic, and very, very tasty... Let me know if this doesn't work...

=

mpm,

Hope you get it all together. I'm looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labors!

Mike,

Glad to hear things are coming together! Looking forward to seeing the results.

Jack,

Let me know if I need to help with lodging arrangements, otherwise I'll assume all is set.

All,

Since no one has filed an objection to Italian, I've made the reservation. They have gluten-free pasta, by the way, if that's an issue for anybody...

Guess I'd better get cracking on detailing the beast! No rest for the wicked...

For those staying at Weasku Inn, here are some simple directions...

I5 North to exit 48, City of Rogue River. At the bottom of the off-ramp, turn left, go under the freeway, cross the bridge ("Over the River and Through the Woods" comes to mind), and turn right at the stop sign onto Rogue River Highway (Hwy. 99).

A word of caution from a longtime resident: Stop at that stop sign completely. The local gendarmes love to create revenue from those who prefer "rolling stops." You've been warned...

OK, once on Rogue River Highway, head about 3.5 miles down the road, and you'll see the Weasku Inn on the right.

If anybody needs anything, gets lost, etc. you can call me on my mobile at (541) two, two, six, six, one, zero, one.

See you soon!

Dinner Wednesday evening on the way to Portland...

I will stop by the Weasku Inn about quarter to seven, and lead everyone to the Italian deli I mentioned earlier. If, for some reason, there is a straggler, the place is called Paisano's, and is located in the City of Rogue River, in the Rays's shopping center. Right turn off of Exit 48, go to the stop sign at the end, turn right, go to the shopping center on the right (a couple of blocks) and Paisano's is in the middle.

See you tomorrow evening!

Michael,

No problem at all. Sorry to hear it. Things do happen, especially with classic cars. Why not make it a foursome in the car you'll be driving? Just a thought...

In any case, I'll wait until the last minute to change the dinner reservations. I know the owner well, and it won't matter to him.
