I will try to add new finds in the future

retrodave111
hi paul, i have just joined the forum, and the club, as i have just purchashed a r.h.d car the id is 100 012 22 000882, if you want to add it to the list, it want's work, and i will be looking out for some chome parts as well of other bits, dave collins in england
paul-NL
Welcom Dave,

But i need at least one picture of the car to add it in the category identified cars [:D]
I have the Vin added in the Excel-database already. I would also like the colour from the outside and the interior.

I will send you an Email that you can use for returning some added pictures of your car.

Thanks for your help
with kindly regards

First pictures have arrived, and the car is in the registery now.
I will add your Vin in the overview .
Thank for your help.
Please keep us up to date with your progress ....
Thanks
.
paul-NL
So,

since there are several short films of 600 (drives) in the web, I started to download them and also catalog them according their Vin ..

[}:)][;)][:o)
Art Love
Paul,
I find it interesting that there does not appear to be a "prototype" RHD car. The first RHD in your list is #78. I would have expected them to have made one early to sort out the "bugs". I know these are the ones you have pictures of. Do you have an earlier RHD chassis that you don't have a picture of?
Art
paul-NL
Hi Art,

Until now that #78 is the oldest Vin as a RHD-car. And that Vin we have also identified.

It might be that there is an older one around, but we did not find it yet .... Sooner or later we will find more ..... You see we are doing our best to get them [:D]

I don't think, that there was ever a RHD-prototype. The RHD went imho normaly in production. Why would german builders wan't to test a RHD while 80 % of the countries uses LHD-cars. So there are much more LHD-test-possibilities [:o)]

Until now we have discovered 127 Vins from the 342 produced RHD-600. From those 127 RHD-Vins are 94 identified.
So, ... still many to go. And of some of them I know they are RHD, but I still don't know if that are SWB or LWB four- or six-doors or even Landaulets ...[}:)] We keep digging continiously ....

PS as you might have seen we discovered RHD 1099 . The identifying picture is that car shown NEXT to yours ..... So I might possible you could deliver me the "original" picture in colour ?????? and sharper ????. Well I know now what to look for ... [B)]

BTW I might have an older movie from a couple of M100-cars ( to any meeting ?? ) where I believe to see your car among some other M100-cars. There is also filmed a white 6.9 taking over.
The fellow driving that car is as I believe a maroon 600 from which I still look for it's fitting Vin ...
I will see if I can make some pictures and send them to you =with some questions [:)]
The video is called "M-100 Powered Mercedes Benz Australie"
If have tried to make some screen-pictures, but that does not work ....
So I can't send any pictures of the driver of the maroon car ..
Art Love
Paul,
I'm not sure if I have sent you this before, but I know from contempory literature from 1965 that I had access to many years ago that the following VIN's came to Australia. All were 100.012 22 chasses.
#100
#134
#137
#157
#166
#172
#177
#178
#181
#195
#202
#234

I have no photos of most of them individually. You know #177 and #178. John Freeman has #157 in Toowoomba as well as #262 and another two. I should have a photo of #157 somewhere that I can send you. #134 was parted, Ron Bunting and I knew it, but I don't think I have a photo.
Art
paul-NL
Yepp Art,

I all got them from you in the past.
Now from the mentioned Vins are identified # 166 - 177 - 178 - 202 and 234.

So the search for the others is still on ....
6point3
Hi Paul

I 've always thought of gathering info like you HAVE here.
I've run into my share of 600s, but not always tracked their numbers.
Your efforts here are anything short of amazing and deserve some recognition. I certainly appreciate it. [:)]
I do not know, why ANY 600 owner would not want it to be included as public record so-to-speak, or as an antitheft deterrant........[8)]

It also seems you're building a video / photo library as well, which with todays' storage possibilities makes more sense than it had ever before.
I will support you any way I can.

Anyway, on that regard, try the free VLC video player. (google it)
I believe (but don't garantee) it to be virus/ spyware free.
Not that you need another video player, BUT this one has a function that allows you to take snap shots of the video footage.
I thought this might help in the long run....

In that case you have to change your posting-name [:D]

Don't ask me how I got your car or which one that is, because from many cars I don't know (the name of) the owner.
Our database has reached 1300 Vin, which is almost the half of all produced cars.
The pictures from the identified cars ( and detailpictures ) has grown to 5.5 Gigabytes. Even the Popes Landaulet is identified [;)]

I will try to find that video-player and test it for getting screens-pictures out of those downloaded videos.

So, if you find a new one let me please know and send me pictures.
Thank you ..

Paul,

That video and the second similar one were taken in Melbourne. The 600 from which some of the film is being taken is one of Heinz S's cars and that is him at the wheel where they do the U turn. I don't recognize the young fellow driving it later. The 600 that they overtake was one that they came across totally by coincidence while out driving and filming. To the best of my knowledge, neither Heinz or any of the others out that day know who the owner is. They did not stop and he drove on.

The driver of the white 6.9 is David Byrne and you should have that car in the register. David also has a red LHD 6.3 and had a RHD 6.3 that I believe he sold. I'm not sure if he still has the other 2 cars or not. The gold 6.3 is Craig Tucker's. The line up of 600's are at Heinz's place and all his. He has sold at least one of the ones in the line up at that time. If he reads any of this, he can chime in and correct me if I am wrong.

My car is not in any of it. I think that Craig is currently en-route to the M-100 Florida Meet with Anthony Long.

I tried the VLC . Unfortunly the screenpicture / screenimage of the film is also a black picture. So it does not work eighter.

paul-NL
Hi Brent,

Thank you very much for this new Vin in my database. I had to look where I stored your picture, but after some searching I found it back and renamed it correct. Now I have to send them also to my "Back-up" harddisk on Bill Kaidbey's computer [:I]

We have now 2301 Vin of the 6.3 and 398 are identified. So that are just a little more then 6 %.

The LWB # 000069 we have already in our database and is stored with many pictures. For the 600-series we still need about 110 identified extra cars and then we have every THIRD produced car in our database equal 33.333 %.

Thank you for the info.

I hope you tried several times.
Old 8 mm film was shot @ about 20-26 frames per second and video is shot @ 30 frames , so some frames have to be black to account / fill for speed adjustment....[;)]
Assuming an 8mm film was converted into video....

I pushed the pause-button, so the pictures should stand still / would be frozen ....
The screen shows an perfect flash, but when I take a screenshot with Irfanview, then appears only a black field in the screenshot.

But I will try again .....

I think you misunderstood me.
The whole idea behind using this player is to USE IT'S OWN SNAP-SHOT FUNCTION, not another screen or whatever shot program.
I have not used mine in a while, but I cannot imagine they changed it.

And is trying to get us the Vins.

retrodave111
paul, someone told me about 2 weeks since that 6 600's have been found in tasmania, he said he read it it in an english classic car magazine, i will try to find out, dave

just one 600 is enough at the moment
Art Love
Dave,
I suspect it is this article your friend was talking about and the 6 should read 1. The author got the information from Heinz. It covers Joe's 3 Melbourne 600's as well - total 4. I would be surprised if there were another UK article and there have never been 6 600's in Tasmania - they would not fit[:D].

Chris
Hi All,

The two new cars found in Melbourne outer suburbs and posted by Heinz are both early cars. I have bought them both. 100 014 22 000181 appears to be saveable underneath the covers. The other one is similar in vintage but the chassis number is illegible at the moment.

It is coming out from under the covers and being moved next week. Once the chassis number becomes clear I will let you all know. This car is good for parts only, unfortunately, but is very much complete with tools, books, spare parts kit, hydraulic kit and other assorted good things in the boot.

Both cars are white with blue leather, both have their Becker Grand Prix with rear adapter and air conditioning and headrests. No sunroof, unfortunately.

I'll keep you all informed of developments if you are interested.

Chris

Chris
Art Love
Well, that is another one off my list of early Australian delivery 600's on the previous page located and identified, and possibly another if the chassis number on the second car is confirmed and on the list. Original owner name I have for #181 is "Barrysmith". Thanks for the posting Chris, Paul will be pleased. Maybe the parts car has a servicable multifunction stalk[;)], let me know if it has.
Art
paul-NL
Hi Chris,

welcome and thanks for your help to build up our registery.
Vin 181 was already known, but we had no picture(s).
The other we only can wait until you know it's correct Vin.

Now you are making us mad, since you mention a 4door Pullman 181, but we have in our database only a SWB 181 [:D][:D][:D].
Could you confirm our database is correct or false ????

I would be very glad if I could get some pictures from you.
I will send you an Email, that you can use to return info and or pictures.

Thanks you very much .

Chris
Hi all,

Sorry for any confusion. They are definately NOT pullman cars: they are standard wheelbase 600's.

I will post detailed pics when the cars are moved to here.

Art, if the parts car has a good stalk, your name ison it!

Chris

Chris

Regarding derelict 600's in Victoria,
About 20 years ago I bought a BMW M6 from a guy on the Dandenong road. I remember his name clearly because I got the car so cheap (about 1/10 the of the cost of one from a dealer ) . His name was Gunter Draude and he had Three very down at heel 600's. I am thinking that Craig T's cars or Chris's are the same ones and have been sitting for a very long time.

What happened to that black hire one that was on its knees in the yard on the northside that you knew the address of? I haven't heard of the guy who ran that firm in ages. Is the car still there? Does Paul have its VIN in the register? I have a couple of pictures of it somewhere from years ago.

Ron,
Thanks. I rang the number on the website you posted and spoke to a very nice lady who said Tony still had the car and has shifted it in out of the weather to a shed. She said he had rejoined the local M-B Club. I have given her my phone number and the website address and told her of Paul's register. She will pass on my message and thought he would be interested.

I hope so, anyway, we will see.

Ruud
Hi Paul, just curious, the left key, without the plastic, did it come standard with the car? I only have the 'plastic' ones (the other two).
paul-NL
Hi Ruud,

as far as I know the oldest versions could have three different keys, because they could lock some parts away for the garage, so not everybody could unlock all the locks as for example the thrunk and the dashboardcase. Possible also an extra key for a lockable petrolcap.

Chris
HI all,

Another 600 VIN for you.

My other car has been removed from it's home among the spiders and rats in a back yard, and I can now read the number: 100 012 22 000846. At least, I am fairly sure it is 846: it is very hard to tell.

The attached photos will show why...

If you are interested in 6.3 identification, I can identify another 6 for you if you like, as I have dismantled that many... And the lady from whom I bought the two 600's remembered she has one under a tree in her yard....it is worse than the two 600s!

Chris
paul-NL
It looks, that you are reading a wrong VIN-number
846 is a LHDcar with italian specifications and colour should be antracite with cognac leather ....

So please do an other reading for me .....
possible 346 ??
When I see it right on the pictures, that second car has the oldstyle Nackenrollen and squaremodell outermirrors. So in that case the Vin should be between 001028 and 001133
Thanks for your help ..

Is there not a Vinplate in front of the radiator kind like this ? :

Ron B
Looking at the overall condition I would say the plate has probably corroded away. A better bet would be to read the engine number and go from there. It's unlikely in Australia for a 600 to have been retro fitted with another engine in the old days. Pretty amazing that it ever got into that condition considering it's value when new.

The rear seat radio remote isn't really that rare. I would guestimate the 1/3 to 1/2 of the 600s I've seen have it.
paul-NL
Hi Ron,

there is no connection between the Vin and the Motornumber.
When you don't have the Datacard, you will never be able to find then the Vin.

For example Vin 10001212002612 has motornumber 10098212000045 ......
Without Datacard there is NO connection.

But, what about the official carpapers / Licensenumberpapers ????
In europe the Vin is as far as I know always mentioned in these License carpapers.

for the 6.3 serie:
Vin ........Motorno
LHD 1289 ==> 001343
LHD 1290 ==> unknown
LHD 1293 ==> unknown
LHD 1298 ==> 001342
LHD 1308 ==> 001357
LHD 1321 ==> 001362
RHD 1323 ==> unknown
RHD 1331 ==> 001340

I can't see any remaining registration stickers on either car windscreen or side window in the pictures I have. That sticker has the VIN. Chris said the books were in one of the cars and they may include an old registration certificate (which has the VIN) or a record of the VIN in the service manual. If the plate is missing from the radiator support panel (to the right of centre in the direction of travel) or so corroded as to be indecipherable, then it should be readable stamped into the right front chassis rail behind the aircon compressor and in front of the bracket for the windscreen washer bottle.

And while I'm on my pedestal, that VIN for 181 that Chris posted on the previous page should be 100.012 22 000181 rather than 100.014
for the sake of accuracy. These plates can be exceedingly difficult to read when they have been out in the weather for 20 years.

Chris e.mailed to say he can't make out the numbers on the chassis rail with certainty because of corrosion, having already looked there, but he'll try again when the engine is out.

On a more successful note, Tony Basile rang back this morning. Chassis number of his car is 100.012 22 001911.
Motor number is 100.980 22 001993. I can't immediately find my 1980's pictures of the car in wedding service, so Ron's of it on its knees will have to do for the time being.

He also said he had 4 roundies, 180,190,220,220S and a container of new roundie parts to go with them for $15000 if anyone is interested. I suspect you can see a couple of the mentioned cars behind the 600 in Ron's picture.

Hi all,

It could be a 3.

Engine is 100 980 22 000601: it is on the reg sticker, dated 1978, when the car was last registered. Back then, Vicroads only kept engine numbers, not chassis numbers.

It is astonishing to think of a car so valuable getting into that condition. But much of it is surprisingly good. The engine will not be out for some time, but I will keep you posted as to what that number is when I can find it!

The books with the cars are from the other one, that I already know about.

The car does have early mirrors on it, but it does have security keys, where 181 does not.

Is it possible to check 346 as the end number, and see what specs it had?

Art, I have found some gutter moulds for your W112....I will mail you details tomorrow: don't have your address on my work computer.

It's amazing what some really wealthy people will do with their toys.

Hi Chris,

In that case the Vin should be around 000550
000546 is still free, so it might be that Vin ??
I hope this will help.

with kindly regards
