K4B 050 Transmission
Author Last Post

Good evening.

This is a warning for anyone replacing A1122700079 diaphragm in any K4X XXX transmission.

I replaced it with new genuine fresh made part from MB Germany (bought 09/2020). I took only 2 years to fail! I'm using correct MOBIL 220 ATF. I will report MB feedback on warranty replacement later. The original diaphragm was still fine after 50+ years and I replaced it just as a precaution. It was a big mistake.

It’s easy to find out such a failure. You will get huge blue smoke with warm engine (as idle vacuum is the biggest after all warm-up circuits are closed). Check the tranny vacuum line and you will find ATF dripping out. I found level of ATF on the piston no. 4 after removal of spark plug. I thought I have a head failure first!

UPDATE: MB Dealer told me that it's not worth of effort to start warranty process on such a cheap parts. I would have to prove professional installation and ATF would need to be checked for compliance with MB standards.

Oops, my bad, sorry for clogging the sticky one. Yes I will try to move these posts to a separate thread, hopefully I can find a way to do this. May need some help from a Forum administrator though.

Ingvar, can you take this discussion to its own thread please? This one is sticky at the top of the forum to be a reference to others for doing a transmission rebuild. This conversation is a distraction to that. -CTH

If the hydraulic coupling is dry I see no problem in putting it back in, sure there is the risk of it developing leaks later but R&R the transmission is not a completely horrible job, especially if you pay someone else to do it :)

Transmisson stands on the workbench now. Not as heavy as I expected, 77 kgs with the converter, 62 kgs without it. Rather manageble.

Presently I am considering NOT to take apart the converter; it is clean and dry all around, no signs of oil leakage there. Please object if you see that I am in error.

The embarrassing oil leaks appear to be from the transmission itself, and mainly from the rear. Also, I saw very minor leaks while driving and immediately after driving, the larger quantities of oil leaking has been while standing in the garage during winter.

So I am guessing that a number of gaskets and seals have lost their flexibility due to old age. This is why I am about to replace as many of them as possible.

When this is done my dear Amelia will be almost as good as new in the drive train :)

Albert and Paul,

for a dead forum I would say that it is still moving, would you agree to call it a zombie at least? Sort of an undead forum then.

Anyway I am very happy for the most helpful replies I am receiving, I would say that the replies I get are also very timely according to my expectations. Not too fast, not too slow, and full of massive knowledge.

Humble Regards from Ingvar in Sweden

Thanks Anthony! Or should I say Mr President :)

I will look into this shortly, I lifted out the converter yesterday, still planning for the heavy lifting of the transmission onto my workbench. No big issue but I am not as strong as I used to be, so I need to employ an engine lifting crane for this job.

Yes, you need to completely disassemble it, if it's not been open before the rivets around the input/output sectioned will need to be drilled out and threads tapped for reassembly. I sent mine to a torque convertor place but they were familiar with them.

abl567: The seals in the hydraulic coupling, how do I access those ? Are we looking at a complete disassembly here, I can see there are many bolts close to the edge of the unit.

Thanks and regards from Ingvar

Paul,

I have looked into the registry section a few times now, using two different browsers (in some cases the web page functionality may vary depending on browser type), but still not found any means to 'upload' or 'publish' or 'edit'... only to search among existing records in the registry.

Maybe the clublounge webpage (or whatever) requires something more than what I am using.

In any case I will be happy to send an email with all the relevant information, also including a fair amount of pictures of my sweet Amelia (that's her name, my 6.3).

Kind Regards from Ingvar

Albert,

such a thread about replacing the rear crankshaft seal on M100 would be much appreciated.

Albert, thanks for keeping the K4B 050 topic alive and kicking.

So I have pulled the trasmission out, on its way to the workbench now. Heavy it is.

I did order and receive a few gaskets and seals already:

. 100 270 23 01

. 100 270 22 01

. 112 271 09 80

. A number of small details that were still available.

+ I will now order the diaphragm, 112 270 00 79, guessing it may come in handy.

Kind Regards from Ingvar

Hi Albert,

Since photobucket blocked all pictures via a link I tried in the past to upload those original pics instead of those links. that was a lot of work, but I could so save the value of this thread. Only for the openingspost I missed the needed rights for editing. That openingspost could or can only be changed / edited by the original poster ......

That was the way I tried to keep this thread with fitting pics .... Nowaday we can upload larger pics as before the switch ... and we don't need those links anymore ...

Hi Paul, how are you? Long time ago I talked to you...

I understand you have rescued the pictures in my K4B 050 posts from the Photo Bucket disaster. Just saw some pics from those days with the Photo Bucket name splashed all over . Just wanted to let you know that I still have all these pics under the original file name/number... Please let me know if you need these.

Do I understand correctly that the new forum does not allow posted pictures to be enlarged? I tried, could not find how. And when you save a posted pic, it is in a real low resolution... Are these pics saved that way on the server?

If so, it does not pay off in my opinion to post threads like the K4B 050 thread...

Please let me know your thoughts...

@ Ingvar,

when you login in the memberarea you can find the registery under the button "membership"

there is a search by the vin possible and to upload data from a car ...

else send me an email : vonschwartzenberg att ziggo.nl and i will send those data and or pics to the webmaster for the registery ...

Regarding the gasket kits for the K4B 050 transmission below are the pics of these gasket kits.

From top to bottom:

100 270 23 01 Still available, MSRP $54.00

100 270 22 01 Still available, MSRP $72.00

100 270 24 00 NLA, but refers now to 112 271 09 80. Which is just the cork gasket for the pan. Also in this kit a bunch of seals and the valve body gasket.

100 270 21 01 NLA, but refers now to 112 270 00 79. Which is the diaphragm for the modulating pressure. There are many more lip seals, gaskets and aluminum and copper sealing rings in this kit.

Hopefully all these parts are still available.

Well, so no interest in continuing the K4B 050 story.

Of course I have to agree with Paul, this forum is completely dead...

Anyone interested in a thread about replacing the rear crankshaft seal on a M100 engine, without removing the heads and pistons? Getting ready to do that right now on a Euro 6.9 engine.... Same story on the 6.3 engines...

Ah, the registry, well, I have been a member for 11 years or so and I do not know where my data may have gone. How can I complete this information now ?

When I go to the registry it is not obvious to me how to add the relevant information.

Ingvar,

I am talking about the period BEFORE this webside switched to here. There were daily MANY valuable posting and many non-paying posters weren't longer alowed to post / write anymore ... Since the traffic has not recovered ....

By the way, as far as I can check I have no data or picture(s) of your car in our registery for the 6.3 ...

Paul, what can I say?

Many old-fashioned forums receive the same criticism from people that have gotten used to the instant (often erroneous) feedback they get in various "social media".

To appreciate this here traditional forum, one has to be patient. I am not complaining, it it often healthy to avoid being in a hurry.
